Our Name

Sequoyah, known as the “Cherokee Sage,” was born in Taskigi, Tennessee about 1770. Although he walked with a limp due to a childhood disease, “his mind soared high and wide.” As a young man, he realized the importance of literacy for the Cherokee people. He began working to design characters and symbols that would express the Cherokee language.

The work was slow and difficult. Many called him a lazy idiot who was wasting his time; others accused him of practicing evil arts. Working with his daughter’s help, he finally completed a workable syllabary. (In a syllabary, symbols stand for whole syllables; in an alphabet, the symbols stand for single sounds. Sequoyah actually combined the two.) Because the system was simple and adaptable, most Cherokee speakers could master it within a few days. Important

Ten helpful test-taking tips for parents:

    1.   Make sure that your child does all their homework and reading assignments, this will help make sure your child is prepared for the test.

    2.  If you are anxious about your child's test, it's ok but try to keep cool around your child, you don't want them to get anxious about their tests too.

    3.  Encourage your child to do well but don't pressure him/her. You may stress him/her out. It is important for your child to stay relaxed for the test.

    4.  Keep a positive attitude about tests.

    5.  Provide a quiet, well lighted area with little distractions to help your child study efficiently.

    6.  Mark down test days on your calendar so you and your child are both aware of testing dates.

    7.  Make sure that your child gets enough sleep on the night before the test.

    8.  Ensure that your child eats a healthy breakfast and avoid heavy foods that may make him/her groggy and avoid high sugar foods that may make him/her hyper.

    9.  Make sure that your child gets up early enough so that he/she will be on time to school.

    10. Talking about the test with your child can relieve stress about test taking.
